5 Ways To Use Technology at Open House

It is Open House season! Every year at this time, teachers invite parents into classrooms to view student work, projects, and to share successes from the year. This year, spice it up a bit. By the time that parents get to the upper elementary grades, they have seen it all. All Open Houses will blend together for families especially if they have multiple children. Here are 5 ways to utilize technology to make your Open House stand out as one to remember.

  1. Have Students Present Their Work

Create mini stations in your classroom and have students at each one presenting a project that they recently completed. Give them access to technology so that they can utilize multimedia tools.

  1. Use QR Codes to Link to Videos of Student

If the previous idea sounds too difficult to pull off, consider filming your students, post videos on your YouTube channel, and create QR codes for parents to view their child’s work.

  1. Use QR Codes to Link to Student Portfolios

Have students create an ePortfolio and link the folder to a QR code. Make sure the wi-fi is strong at your school and can handle the extra devices!

  1. Live Tweet Your Open House for Parent Who Can’t Attend

Not all parents will be able to make Open House. For them, consider live tweeting so that they can stay informed. Additionally, use Twitter to promote your event to maximize your outreach.

  1. Show a Culminating iMovie

Compile pictures and work samples from the school year and create an iMovie to play in your room. If set to the right music, you will create a lasting memory. Don’t forget to pop some popcorn!

  1. Interesting ideas. Do you find that parents like, or even prefer this kind of engagement? I would certainly love technology at an open house, but I wonder if all parents feel this way, and how they react if they don’t like it.
